Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Louisville, KY · March 14–16, 2024 · 4 investigators · 3-night investigation

Executive Summary

Case Overview

Between The Worlds Paranormal Society conducted a three-night investigation of Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky during March 2024. The facility, which operated as a tuberculosis hospital from 1910 to 1961, is one of the few locations where our team has been able to conduct multi-night, controlled investigations with consistent results across multiple visits.

The investigation produced three categories of anomalous evidence: a Class A Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) captured simultaneously on two independent recorders during Night Two, persistent temperature differentials in Room 502 and the body chute entrance that could not be attributed to environmental factors, and a consistent compass deviation in a specific section of the fifth-floor corridor.

The case is classified as Inconclusive pending peer review of the EVP capture and a planned fourth visit with an electromagnetic specialist. No single piece of evidence constitutes proof of paranormal activity; the pattern of evidence across three nights warrants continued investigation.

Location Profile

Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Waverly Hills Sanatorium operated from 1910 to 1961, primarily as a tuberculosis hospital. At its peak it housed over 400 patients. The facility was purpose-built to maximise patient exposure to fresh air and sunlight — the prevailing treatment for tuberculosis before the development of effective antibiotics.

The body chute — a 500-foot tunnel running from the basement to the bottom of the hill — was used to transport deceased patients discreetly, preventing the sight of bodies from demoralising remaining patients.

Field Log

Three-Night Timeline

Night One

March 14, 2024

Baseline Establishment

Full instrument deployment across all accessible floors. EMF and temperature baselines logged for every room. Audio baseline recordings conducted in silence. Three areas of persistent temperature anomaly identified: fifth-floor corridor, body chute entrance, and Room 502.

Night Two

March 15, 2024

Active Investigation

Two simultaneous field teams deployed — fifth floor and body chute. At 2:17 AM, EVP session initiated in the corridor outside Room 502. Class A EVP captured at 2:34 AM. Session suspended and evidence secured for review.

Night Three

March 16, 2024

Verification Protocol

Return to Night Two EVP location under identical conditions — same equipment, same investigators, same questions, same time. EVP not reproduced. Structural survey conducted with licensed engineer confirming temperature anomalies are not attributable to building systems.

Evidence Log

Documented Anomalies

All evidence items below were captured during the March 2024 investigation. Primary audio evidence (EVP) is restricted to verified members in the Evidence Vault.

EVP

Class A EVP — Night Two

Peer Review Pending

Fifth-floor corridor, Room 502 vicinity. Single-word direct response captured simultaneously on two independent recorders. Audible without enhancement.

Thermal

Temperature Anomaly — Room 502

Documented

14°F differential persisting across all three nights. Structural survey by licensed engineer ruled out HVAC remnants and structural gaps as cause.

EMF

Compass Deviation — 5th Floor Corridor

Documented

Consistent 7° compass deviation in a specific section of the fifth-floor corridor. Repeated across all three nights with multiple instruments.

Environmental

Persistent Cold Spots — Body Chute Entrance

Documented

Temperature anomaly identified on Night One baseline. Consistent with readings taken on subsequent nights. No air movement source identified.

Primary audio evidence restricted

The Class A EVP recording from Night Two is available in the Evidence Vault for verified members only. Associate Hunters and Research Fellows may access the full audio file and spectral analysis.

Conclusions & Next Steps

After three nights and extensive post-investigation analysis, we are left with a pattern of evidence that warrants continued investigation. None of the individual items constitutes proof of paranormal activity. Together, they represent a consistent set of anomalies that have resisted conventional explanation.

The Class A EVP has been submitted to our external peer review panel. A fourth visit is being scheduled with a physicist from our peer review network who specialises in electromagnetic anomalies. The case file remains open.
